Campus Recreation Holds Valley View Mike Donahue 5-Miler Race

The Valley View Mike Donahue 5-Miler, hosted by Campus Recreation in partnership with Liberty University Military Affairs, was held Nov. 9 at Liberty Mountain Hydaway Outdoor Center on the Liberty Mountain Trail System.

This race was the largest Valley View race to date, with 178 participants according to Katy Clay, director of outdoor recreation. The race, held in memory of Major Mike Donahue,
featured “special pre-race ceremonies meant to honor all those who have lost their lives serving our nation.” The race was set in the woods on the trails with three aid stations throughout the race.

“It is an excellent way to meet new people, get involved and get outside,” Clay said.

Before the race started, participants gathered under the pavilion. The check-in table gave out T-shirts and bibs to participants.

After checking in, some of the runners stretched, jogged on the field and prepared themselves for the race. There was also a table set up with food and drinks.

“A friend encouraged me to sign up for this event, and shorter races are fun,” Sarah Russo, one of the racers, said.

Before the race started there were some announcements and ceremonies for the race dedication. The colors were presented, and the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem were played.

Bailey Donahue, who is the daughter of Mike Donahue, spoke about her father and his story. In a heartfelt speech, she talked about how much her father cared for the city of Lynchburg and Liberty University.

Following the speech, there was a moment of silence for veterans who have given their lives in service.

Matthew Sell, a 19-year-old from Grabill, Indiana was the overall winner of the race finishing at 33:40. Jessica Dryer, an 18-year-old from Waynesboro, Virginia, was the first woman to cross the line at 45:08.
