Perfecting your game-day fit
Picture the excitement of Liberty University’s first home game of the season. A sea of red-wearing, spirit-filled fans packed Williams Stadium, cheering on the talented athletes as they faced off against the Camels. If you were there, you experienced firsthand the exhilaration of Liberty’s game-day atmosphere.
Football season is one of the most incredible times on campus. It symbolizes the start of a new school year and provides many opportunities to show your school spirit. If you are a student looking for new trends and ideas for game day attire, look no further. The five tips and tricks listed below will help you get fitted up and ready for the Flames’ next game day.
1. Showcase School Spirit!
Wearing Liberty colors is one of the easiest ways to represent the school. In case you did not already know, the colors for Liberty include red, navy and white. Students often wear red as their main color, then add pops of white or navy. Others may opt for a navy or white base with a layer of red.
“I prefer to wear red T-shirts with athletic shorts and tennis shoes to games,” sophomore Ethan Tolar said. “It is comfortable and easy.”
Denim clothing items and patterns mixing the school colors are also a popular find at games. Stores surrounding campus such as the Liberty University Barnes & Noble Bookstore, Walmart and Target all have great Liberty apparel to fit your game day needs.
2. Accessorize, Accessorize!
Accessories may be small, but they often leave a large impact on an outfit. From jewelry to makeup, there are so many ways to elevate a game day fit. A red hair bow or a Liberty hat are great options to help style hair and protect yourself from the hot sun.
“My favorite accessory to wear to football games would be my red knitted hair bow,” sophomore Natalie Simmons said. “My former RA handmade them, and I purchased it from her for games.”
Another great way to accessorize is through makeup. A fun makeup look can complete an entire outfit. Red lipstick or fun eyeliner are trendy ways to incorporate school colors and spirit.
3. Prepare for all types of weather conditions!
Lynchburg is a beautiful city in the mountains, but the weather can be unpredictable. The Flames football season goes from late summer to late fall, which means the temperature changes drastically. As the season goes on, it is vital to make sure you keep up with the weather to plan accordingly. For earlier season games, shorts and T-shirts are the most-worn items at a game. Sunscreen and sunglasses are additional essentials for the games in the summer months. However, students tend to wear coats, sweatshirts and jeans toward the end of the season. Come rain or shine, the games will go on. To prepare for a rainy game, ponchos are an easy option to bring so you can still enjoy the day. (Extra points if they are red!)
4. Wear good shoes!
During a Liberty football game, students are often on their feet for the game’s entirety. Jumping, walking and climbing stairs are usually parts of the day. For that reason, footwear can make or break a game-day experience.
“Cowgirl boots are my favorite shoes to wear to a game,” sophomore Reese Hodges said. “They add a stylish touch and are durable for various outdoor conditions.”
To avoid aching feet, wear shoes that you know are comfortable for long hours. Wearing new shoes is fine, but it is best to break them in prior to game day. As you have read throughout this article, wearing red is the No. 1 tip on game days. A pair of red shoes can spice up an outfit and tie all the pieces together.
5. Have fun!
As basic as it sounds, having fun is the best way to improve a game day experience. Going to the game with a group of friends or your hall is not only great for bonding but also great to show out for the school. Take the time to enjoy it and be in the moment. There is no other feeling like cheering on the Liberty Flames under the stadium lights with thousands of other students!
