President’s Post: There is still much work to do

Spring semester is here, and it is an honor to welcome our students back to Liberty University’s campus and also extend our welcome to the new incoming class of students who are joining us in 2023.

As many of you already know, Liberty University is an extraordinary place. That’s not because of the size of our campus, great buildings or state-of-the-art facilities but because of our people.

It is our students, student-athletes, world-class faculty and our administrators who are working around the clock to ensure a top-level education experience with full biblical integration and a Christian worldview.

You are a part of what makes Liberty’s story and what makes Liberty truly special. And together, we are Training Champions for Christ who will change the world.

I was incredibly blessed and encouraged to see our Liberty University students leading the 49th March for Life in Washington, D.C., last Friday.

Over 500 of our Liberty students carried the lead banner in a 50,000-person march to demonstrate their care and concern for the lives of the unborn and mothers in crisis. They were being champions for life.

As we all know, this was the first March for Life since the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson case on June 24, 2022. I thank God that our prayers have been answered.

This was something that we had been praying for since 1973. And when I see the youthful faces, undiminished enthusiasm and fervent spirit of this young generation, I am all the more encouraged about the future of the church and this nation.

Our Founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr., would have loved seeing the day Roe v. Wade was overturned. For many years, he led by example and ensured that Liberty University was never shy when it came to speaking the truth from God’s word about the life of the unborn.

Since 1973, over 63 million children have been killed in the name of choice. That means children were robbed of life, and mothers were robbed of the joy and blessing of a child to nurture and protect.

We know there is still much work to do. And in order to speak the truth in love about abortion, we must continue to demonstrate our love for those who are lost, broken and hurting.

We must be willing to work diligently, give sacrificially and pray unceasingly for the country and surrounding culture. And it could be that God has placed a special calling on you for how you will serve in your church and community as a Champion for Christ in the cause of life.

As interim president, I want to do all that I can to point our students to Jesus Christ. I want to make the gospel clear to our student body and to their parents.

The most important decision you will ever make is whether to follow Jesus Christ and make him Lord of your life or reject him and go your own way.

My plea to all our students is that they would put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness of sin.

Are you a champion for life? I have met many people throughout my ministry who said that it wasn’t medical science, ethical arguments or persuasive politics that changed their minds but that Jesus Christ changed their minds about abortion.

People cannot change how they think without their hearts’ being changed first. Are you a true Champion for Christ?

The Scriptures tell us, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). Have you done that yet? I believe that our students can do just about anything; there are no limits to what they can do if they put their minds to it. But Jesus warned us, “For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his soul?” (Mark 8:36). That is my greatest fear for our students.

The worst story at Liberty University would be about a student who had everything they could desire but left here without ever knowing Jesus Christ. My prayer for all of our students who have not been saved is that they will come to know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
