The Heart of Coaching

Flames fans will notice something different when looking at the Liberty Women’s volleyball team this season, and these changes are all from new head coach Trevor Johnson.

Johnson is starting his tenth season coaching and is taking on the women’s volleyball team this fall, and the girls are taking the leadership he is providing them and running with it.  Johnson encourages the girls to “be where their feet are,” meaning that he wants them to be present on and off the courts.

Although they have already had some losses this season, Johnson is looking forward while reminding the team that he wants to see progress no matter the outcome of the game.  The team is still bonding with each other and playing well requires trusting the teammate beside you.

Since Johnson is trying out a faster paced offense and simpler defense, it requires the team to trust the person that they are hitting the ball to.  They need to trust them on and off the court so that the team can improve.

Coach Johnson wants everyone on the team to trust him as well, so he is taking an extra step to get to know the girls and ask them about how they are doing on and off the court.

“I am going to value them, care about them, ask them how they are doing and so they feel like they have a say in our program,” Johnson said.

Overall, flames fans should show up and support the women’s volleyball team and Johnson as they are growing, remembering that Christ is their true head coach and the one that they are playing for.
