New Liberty University housing options for married students

Due to the lack of on-campus housing for married students, Liberty University proposed an idea to convert the old Annex II dormitories on Odd Fellows Road into an apartment-style complex for couples. According to an article in The News & Advance written by Jessie Pounds, many leaders at the university have said that some students have denied Liberty’s acceptance due to the shortage of housing available for graduate and married students.

These new apartment-style dormitories will actually be cheaper than a typical dorm on campus. The Lynchburg Rental LLC. will be leasing out the new fully-furnished apartments for $500 per month for a studio, $600 per month for a one-bedroom apartment and $750 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. The monthly payments will include utilities, wireless connection and cable hookups.

Although no pets or children will be allowed at these new apartments, it will accommodate a café with wireless internet, an outdoor pool and a new exercise facility for the married and graduate students. Lynchburg Renting LLC has set November 1st for the appropriate projected available date.

According to Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, the Christian school has been trying to make these upgrades for years but the idea was never put into effect.
After the newest addition to housing has been constructed, Commons II, students currently living in the Annex I and Annex II dorms will be given the opportunity to switch to these new dormitories in the spring 2016 semester, allowing possible open dorms for incoming married or graduate students.

Annex I and Annex II dormitories typically interest incoming students due to its community environment and its own dining hall included in the students’ meal plan. Despite its short commute off campus, these dorms tend to fill fast because of its motel-renovated style and the recreational activities provided.

According to Pounds, the city manager, Kimball Payne, has said that the permit has not been accepted yet and it could take up to a couple of months for things to start being put into effect.
