Famous pastor joins College for a Weekend to speak to Liberty students

Louie Giglio, founder and pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, drew thousands of students and visitors to the Liberty University Vines Center Friday, Nov. 7 with his Convocation message.

“I’m gonna blow up the myth that there’s some sort of magic dot on a map that you have to decipher to find God’s will for how you’ll live,” Giglio said.

That statement summarized a large portion of his message, as the 56-year-old pastor rebuked the idea of a “five-year plan” in God’s eyes.

“God never says, ‘Hey, I want to give you a 60-day blueprint,’” Giglio said. “God says, ‘Hey, step out.’”

Regardless of human plans or designs, Giglio promised that pursuit of God-given passions would lead believers to the Christ’s ultimate destination for them. He encouraged the student body to “step out into the complete unknown with God.”

Giglio delivered his message to a Vines Center filled with students and nearly 3,000 guests. Due to the overflow of people, many listened to the message while sitting on the floor or standing near the entrances.

Liberty sophomore Brianna Young, who had never heard Giglio speak before, was impressed.

“He definitely relates to college students,” Young said. “He made me want to go to a Passion Conference.”

Freshman Kat Maunkea found Giglio to be a very engaging speaker and felt he was very informative for the high school and college students attending College for a
Weekend.

Liberty alumnus Mark DeMoss, who is a member of Passion City Church, introduced Giglio. DeMoss praised Giglio’s ability to reach young adults and inspire them through his tours.

DeMoss was introduced by Liberty Flames kicker John Lunsford, who recently broke DeMoss’ old kicking record with an impressive 60-yard field goal in the recent Liberty homecoming game. The kick also broke the Big South Conference record for field goals.

In honor of the occasion, Lunsford presented DeMoss with a broken vinyl record with the inscription “Records are meant to be broken.”
