According to the director of the Virginia Christmas Spectacular, Lorie Marsh, this year’s production, titled “Yes, Virginia … Christmas Letter,” will feature 300-400 participants including the cast, choir, dancers and orchestra.

“It is a whole new experience,” Marsh said. “This year’s production features everybody’s favorite carols plus a dynamic cast of amazing dancers with numbers modeled after the popular ‘Newsies’ Broadway production.”

Marsh said that their mission aims to celebrate the Christmas season and share the good news of Christ’s birth with unbelievers. The show is a chance to share the true meaning and the life-changing message of God’s love for mankind.

“The show gives a ministry outlet to the many artistic people in (Thomas Road Baptist Church) who love to act, dance and sing,” executive director of the production, Charles Billingsley, said. “It also gives a place of service to several other church members by way of ushering, building sets, serving in the parking lot, doing make-up, designing costumes and more.”

According to Marsh, the impact of the production reaches a wide array of people.

“Somewhere around 40,000 people normally attend the shows, and the event is often televised locally, so many more people can watch from their homes,” she said.

Audiences have enjoyed the Virginia Christmas Spectacular for almost half a century.

“I think there is still some merit and value to a traditional production like this,” Billingsley said. “It is a wonderful outreach to those who would typically not come to a worship service but are attracted to the lights and celebration of Christmas.”

According to the Virginia Christmas Spectacular website, the dates for this year’s performances are Dec. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9.
