Twenty-year veteran dies in non-combat incident
Master Sgt. Jamal H. Bowers, a 41-year-old Marine from Raleigh, N.C., died at Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, Africa of a non-combat related incident March 18. Bowers was finishing up a bachelor of science in multidisciplinary studies from Liberty University Online.
Bowers served more than 20 years in locations around the world including Japan, Panama, Saudi Arabia, two tours in Iraq and a tour in Afghanistan. He was assigned to U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Liberty will posthumously award Bowers’ degree to his family. Bowers is survived by his parents, Leroy and Mary Bowers; wife, Kawana King-Bowers; son Jamal, who is also a U.S. Army Special Operations soldier; daughter Surita; and step-daughters Clarice and Denise Kimp.
What is a “non-combat related incident” and why won’t they specify it?
It was medical, and thus personal. The Army’s statement said he was sent home sick one day and “found dead” the next day.
