Michael Haynes graduated from Liberty University in 2012, since then has made a significant impact in the field of youth ministry through the launch of his company, G Shades. Focused on helping students view life through the lens of the gospel, G Shades provides curriculum designed to simplify ministry while deepening faith. As a student pastor, Mike witnesses firsthand the difficulties of many youth ministries, especially in small and mid-sized churches, to find biblically rich and engaging resources. This need sparked the creation of G Shades, which now serves churches across North America, equipping leaders with gospel-centered sermons, small group guides, and video resources.

Mike fondly remembers his time at Liberty, particularly the fun-filled nights spent in his dorm, East 76, where friends would gather to play Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies. Surrounded by ramen, Doritos, and soda, the laughter and camaraderie during those late-night gaming sessions formed lasting memories of the “beautiful, fun, and free” college life.

Liberty played a vital role in preparing Mike for his career in youth ministry, and it was here that he gained the biblical foundation needed to help students better understand the Bible and the gospel. The teachings from professors like Dr. Michael Smith and the deep study of Romans were instrumental in shaping his understanding of the gospel’s richness. In addition to biblical knowledge, his time at Liberty helped him develop leadership skills, especially during his role as a Resident Assistant (RA) in East 76. Balancing ministry leadership, friendships, and a romantic relationship while maintaining a healthy spiritual life prepared him for both pastoral life and a successful marriage.

Since graduating, God’s presence has remained a constant in Mike’s life. He has been serving in youth ministry for over a decade, is married with five children (including two adopted teenagers), and continues to see God’s sovereignty at work in his life. A pivotal moment in his faith journey was during a “deconstruction” period after college, where God’s faithfulness deepened his understanding of the gospel and its application to everyday life. Michael’s story is a testament to God’s ongoing provision and guidance.

To current students and soon-to-be graduates, Mike offers this advice: “You have no idea what God has in store for your life, and that’s a terrifying but beautiful reality. God’s plans are so much better than ours, so just be fully present in every moment and trust Him with the rest.” And a lighthearted piece of advice: “Try to have some fun with your dorm. Life gets really busy later, so soak up the free time with your friends now!”

Mike’s journey is a powerful reminder that God’s plans far exceed our own, and His presence can transform both our personal and professional lives in extraordinary ways. Check out G Shades here!
