Liberty University - 50 Years of Training Champions for Christ

About

Since 1971, Liberty University has created a diverse, faithful, and global community of Champions for Christ. Our 50th Anniversary celebrated this rich heritage by tracing the legacy of its champions and their influence upon the world as they bring Liberty’s mission to life.

This year-long celebration was a time for everyone in the Liberty community — students, staff, alumni, faculty, and friends — to reflect on where we’ve come from and what we’ve accomplished, connect with our community, and cast a vision for our future.

After all, one vision brought us to this mountain — and this mountain gave us a vision for the world.

Now, we look to the future with great anticipation for what God has in store for Liberty in the next 50 years of Training Champions for Christ.

I began my journey with Liberty University Online in 2016. Three months after starting, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was devastated and was pretty sure I would have to give up my dream of becoming a teacher. I started chemotherapy and had surgery in my third month of schooling. I became very ill and was down for several weeks from the surgery. I emailed my professors to let them know I might be late with my assignments and that I would appreciate their support and understanding. My professors were amazing! They extended my time and were very thoughtful and helpful during that time. I was determined to not have special treatment or be late with my assignments, but I wanted that cushion just in case. I was able to turn in all of my assignments on time except one. I was very proud of that accomplishment. Liberty University has been a Godsend for me. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and now am in my master's program for Special Education. All of the prayers and support from my peers and professors helped get me through a time when I thought all hope was lost. Through Liberty University, I found strength to push through the hard times and follow the dreams that God has put on my heart to help children.

I lost my mom, wife, and father-in-law in 2012 and 2013. The losses were difficult to deal with, having come so close together. In response to the suffering, the Lord called me to learn more about Him so I could work through the suffering and, though I did not know it at the time, to equip me to perform His work. I entered Liberty University not knowing what I was being called for, but had decided I would follow the call. My trip to Turkey through LU Send led me to understand that whatever we build in this world is meaningless when compared to His glory. I saw the suffering in a new light. The suffering became a blessing and I viewed it as a grace from God to grow me (1 Pet 4:19).

Liberty University provided me with an amazing education in biomedical sciences. It enabled me to get accepted into medical school. I am now pursuing my dream of not only becoming a Champion for Christ, but also a physician for Christ.

50th Anniversary celebration comes to a close, but mission is in full force

Fifty years ago, 154 enthusiastic students took a leap of faith when they ventured to Lynchburg, Va., to enroll in a new college. There were no dorms, no state-of-the-art academic facilities, and no established athletic programs. Just four full-time faculty members, a preacher, and an audacious vision to change the world for God. Inspired by […]
