The Rev. Dr. Herman Robertson, pastor of Poplar Spring Baptist Church in nearby Bedford County, recently learned that Liberty is helping to revive a building project at his church. |
A group of contractors who have agreed to donate labor and materials to revive a project at an area church met with Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. last week to coordinate their plans.
Falwell initiated the project at Poplar Spring Baptist Church, which serves a congregation near his family farm in Bedford County. The church had raised almost $100,000 — an amount that took 20 years to amass — to construct an addition to the building. Once the project began, it was discovered that a local accountant had stolen the funds and that there was no way of getting the money back.
Earlier this year, Falwell sought help from other members of LU's administration and soon learned that several contractors Liberty used were willing to help with the project. LU will be designating a day where students, faculty and staff can help at the site.
The Rev. Dr. Herman Robertson, pastor of Poplar Spring, was a guest at the Feb. 17 convocation where Falwell first announced the project.
“One thing I say is that prayer works," Robertson said. "When we found out about this situation that we’re in, we started praying, and then … we were able to see some of the results.” He personally thanked the chancellor and Liberty, and “my maker Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit for making this possible.”
