LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. appears on CNN

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. appeared on CNN on Wednesday, Jan. 9, discussing the 2008 Presidential race.

It marked the first time Falwell Jr. had been on network television discussing political issues.

“It was pretty exciting,” he said.

The CNN report was hosted by correspondent Wolf Blitzer. Blitzer is the host of CNN’s “The Situation Room.”

Falwell’s father, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, regularly appeared in political discussions on network television.

Falwell Sr. died May 15.

Falwell Jr. has personally endorsed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination.

“They asked me to come on the program and discuss who Evangelicals will support,” Falwell Jr. said. “I told them that I think Evangelicals are gravitating toward Huckabee because he is so genuine and sincere. You can tell what he says is heartfelt and he means it. I think that’s why he’s doing so well.”

The CNN program included a segment that featured Republican Candidate Sen. John McCain’s appearance as the primary speaker at LU’s May graduation in 2006.

“They had footage of my father and I welcoming him to Liberty and awarding him an honorary degree,” Falwell Jr. said.

“The program gave me a chance to promote Liberty University. That was one of my main objectives.”

Falwell Jr. was in a studio on the LU campus for his CNN appearance.

“It was all done by satellite,” he said. “It was fun.”

He’s not ruling out future television appearances.

“I enjoyed doing it,” he said. “If I can help people understand how Evangelicals fit into the political world, I’m more than happy to do it.”
