Barclay book published

Professor’s devotional released

Dr. Timothy Barclay, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Liberty University and a counselor at Wyndhurst Counseling, recently published his first devotional that he said is unlike any other.

The devotional, which is entitled “High Capacity Living: A Practical Devotion to Living a Resilient Life,” came out Aug. 16. This book maps out how four simple traits — hope, commitment, accountability and passion (H-CAP) — can help people become more resilient and successful, according to Barclay.

“This has a huge biblical implication because God is the definition of hope. God is the definition of commitment. God is the definition of accountability, and God is obviously the definition of passion, love and motivation for doing things,” Barclay said.

According to Barclay, the book has several different applications. It can be used as a devotional, Sunday school curriculum or a Bible study.

“It breaks everything down and gives the point, ‘here’s how to apply this verse,’” Barclay said. “Then you take an action point each day to create a more resilient spirit.”

There are five sections. On the first four days, the devotional goes through the four traits and gives a scripture passage, a meditation and an action point that the reader must engage in that day. On the fifth day, there is a recap of all the traits, along with four new action points. Then the cycle begins again.

According to Barclay, he believes that God helped him through the
whole process.

“I amazed myself at what God had done through me to let me see these connections and yet be so powerful to have such a profound effect on people,” Barclay said. “I want to get the information out there to improve the quality of peoples’ lives.”

According to Barclay, Liberty and Stetson University are conducting a study to see how the H-CAP model can help with academic retention.

“The premise is how do we engage students to help them attain their academic goals,” Barclay said.

Barclay said he plans to write more books with the H-CAP model in the future. He hopes to expand the model and write a series applying it to business, leadership, and the military, as well as academia.

According to Barclay, “High Capacity Living: A Practical Devotion to Living a Resilient Life” is available through all e-book distributors and will soon be seen on the Barnes & Noble campus bookstore shelves.

Dr. Ed Hindson, dean of the Institute of Biblical Studies, shared his thoughts on Barclay’s new devotional in an interview on the
book jacket.

“Dr. Barclay’s highly innovative H-CAP approach to building spiritual growth, strength and resilience is biblical, practical and professionally competent,” Hindson said. “His emphasis on hope, commitment, accountability and passion speaks to the deepest needs of our lives.”
