From the desk 3/2

You know that scene in E.T. when the disproportionate alien waddles breathlessly to the window in a bright blonde wig and points with his bony, bejeweled finger to the window cooing, “E.T. phone home.” “E.T. phone home.” Well, I know exactly how the little alien feels. In a sense, I’ve been working towards home my entire life. I’ve never truly […]

We the people are entitled?

Reducing national debt is a serious concern. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released a report urging the U.S. to “act quickly” to reduce national deficits. The IMF warned that a loss of US credibility could start a catastrophic series of events. Fox News ran an article on the President’s efforts to reduce the national debt. The website quoted former Republican […]

Graduation anticipation

Three months. In less than three short months, the members of class of 2011 will walk across the commencement stage and boldly step out into the great unknown. Some seniors are counting down the days until graduation. Others are too busy with capstone courses to notice that it is the middle of February, meaning spring break is imminent. The remainder […]

Hey Y’all. Tip 1: Never repeat those words in New York City. Tip 2: If you even have those words in your vocabulary, maybe you should think twice about visiting. I wish someone would have given me this advice before I departed this weekend for three days surrounded by people that don’t quite understand southern charm. It wasn’t that the […]

From the desk

“Darling, Your wedding band sure does shine. Keep it on always as the girls will know you are already taken and belong to me forever and ever. I love you, dearest. Mama” I found this note on the back of an old photo, buried beneath decades of memories on a desk in my grandparent’s house. It was a photo I […]

Fines for walking, talking

Listening to music. Catching up with family back home. Texting friends between classes. All of the above are normal ways to fill the otherwise-boring time spent walking from DeMoss to Campus North, or walking to pick up a car that seems like it is parked three miles away. But these completely normal pastimes are actually unwise. In fact, pedestrians who […]

The illusion of liberty in Egypt

For nearly two weeks all eyes have been on Egypt, many wishing it a new start, but few realizing what that could truly mean. Public protests broke out late January in Egypt as widespread anger at President Hosni Mubarak and his regime came to a boil. Citizens believed that Mubarak’s nearly 30-year reign of Egypt has been tolerated too long […]

Stop the MADNESS of Jersey Shore

Italy is about to have a situation on its hands. MTV’s popular “reality” television show “Jersey Shore” will be filming its third season from Italy. For those who are unfamiliar with the program, the show is about eight young Italian-Americans partying their lives away at the Jersey Shore. Despite the raunchy content, many Americans have become enraptured with cast members […]

Letter to the editor: Jeffry Harrison

Taylor, I really enjoyed your article about the concealed carry bill going through our student government. You asked for opinions about this topic in your final paragraph, so I’d like to share mine. First, I think the lawful carrying of firearms is the single greatest crime deterrent there is. While living in the Commonwealth of Virginia, you are surrounded by […]

From the desk – 2/1/11

I have this thing that I like to call “the McDonald’s effect.”  Let me explain. When I’m extremely hungry and feeling too lazy to make something, I weigh my options. Taco Bell, while cheap and muy delicioso, is off limits because of a recent scandal involving their meat. I’ll eat anything once, but with recent allegations of being only 35 […]

Chicken gets the boot at IU campus

Secular college campuses are known for proclaiming tolerance from the rooftops of their Georgian-revival buildings. Tolerance for all: genders, races, lifestyles and religions — except for Christianity. Students at Indiana University South Bend will no longer be able to experience the deliciousness of a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich for a meal. Chick-Fil-A has been banned from Indiana University’s South Bend Campus.

The War on Health Care Reform

The GOP-led House of Representatives have made good on a campaign promise. This past week they voted to repeal President Obama’s signature piece of legislation, Health Care. “House Republicans moved quickly ahead with their own overhaul of the nation’s health care system,” Seth McLaughlin of the Washington Times said. Congress voted to repeal Health Care 245-189 with one abstention. All […]
