James Dumoulin, co-founder and content creator for The School of Hard Knocks, spoke at Convocation Oct. 9 at the Vines Center.
In an interview with Vice President of Spiritual Development Josh Rutledge, Dumoulin shared the importance of being bold and stepping out in faith.
“The way that I got here to 26 million followers … was not because I got smarter,” Dumoulin said. “It’s because I took action.”
Dumoulin referenced 1 Peter 5:6 and said that those who are pursuing business must pursue humility first.
Dumoulin explained his unplanned interview with businessman and entrepreneur Mark Cuban.
“Take the risk or lose the chance,” Dumoulin said.
In his message, Dumoulin emphasized how many opportunities are lost simply because people are too fearful of the word no. He also said that building a business and striving for success is a long process.
“I think that if you can adopt that mentality of macro-patience and micro-urgency, I think everybody will be a lot better off,” Dumoulin said.

Sophomore Lauren Bremner said Dumoulin’s message has inspired her.
“I thought that what he had to say was very motivating,” Bremner said. “It definitely encouraged me to just live in the moment.”
Dumoulin left students with the challenge to act now.
“There are seven days a week; someday is not one of them,” Dumoulin said. “Procrastination is the assassination of all destinations, so you cannot procrastinate anymore.”
