Liberty University offers a free financial literacy course, FNLT 101, that teaches and expands on knowledge of financial stability.

The Coordinator of Accounting, David Baker, discussed why is it important for college students to be enrolled in FNLT 101 as many college students are facing crippling debt while in college and after graduation.

“Every college student should take it,” Baker said.

“Once graduating, the average college student leaves with 28,000 dollars in loan debt.”

The financial literacy course itself is founded on Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. It teaches students how to manage debt, establish a budget and find alternative means to fund an education.

Chelsea Holbert, a senior at Liberty University, recently went through Financial Peace University in her FACS 350 class.

Holbert said the class itself is the best class she has ever taken because of the knowledge she gained about financing and the importance of having a budget.

Holbert believes every student should be required to take FNLT 101 before graduating.

“I did not realize what a big deal budgeting and saving money were until this class showed me how quickly things can get out of hand,” Holbert said.

The course is offered online, and enrollment is completely voluntary.

Students will be familiar with the setup of the class, as it is taken through Liberty’s Blackboard portal and reflects the layout of other Liberty online courses.

FNLT 101 is a self-paced course that includes modules, quizzes and a final exam to ensure that students complete the course knowing Dave Ramsey’s steps to a debt-free way of living.

Once completing the course, students receive a certificate of completion and can apply to receive one credit hour toward their degree.

Baker said students who are interested in taking FNLT 101 should register as soon as possible because the course does fill up quickly.

More information about taking FNLT 101 can be found on the Financial Aid website.
