Former U.S. Coast Guard corpsman and longtime lifeguard and swim instructor Eric Hammermeister has instructed the American Red Cross lifeguard courses since 2010.

“This semester is turning out to be a real success,” Hammermeister said.

In previous years the classes have remained small. However, this year classes are filling up fast, with the first course already fully registered for.

“I’m really looking forward to taking the course and regaining my certification. I’ve worked as a lifeguard for the past three years and it’s a fun job. You can make a good amount of money,” junior and Exercise Science major Brandi Bentz said.

“Students will spend time in class watching instructional videos and homework reading, as well as working in the pool for actual practice time,” Hammermeister said.

After passing the course, students will receive certification as a lifeguard, in CPR/AED and first aid. Certification will last two years.

Three classes will be offered this spring with dates as follows: Feb. 21, March 20 and April 10. There will be six sessions per course. All meeting times must be attended for certification. Classes will be conducted in Green Hall and the LaHaye Student Union swimming pool.
