For as long as I can remember, music has always been a source of light in my life. Aside from reading my Bible and spending time with the Lord, listening to worship music regularly has greatly affected my mindset and how I go about my day. After giving my favorite worship songs a listen on the way to school, I find that my mood often shifts to be brighter along with my attitude toward daily activities and interactions with others.

I vividly remember driving to church on Sunday mornings as a kid; my dad would always turn on the K-LOVE radio station. One artist I know played constantly in our car was Jamie Grace. I was fascinated with her upbeat tunes and encouraging messages in the music she played. After all, it is “positive, encouraging, K-LOVE!”

Ever since I decided which Christian artists were my favorites, I began to keep them on repeat. As I grew older, instead of watching YouTube while getting ready, I would put my headphones on and sing along to the songs that made my day a little brighter.

One of my favorite lines from “Beautiful Day” by Jamie Grace is, “Lord, you are the refuge that I can’t wait to get to.”

I felt my mindset physically shift for the day once I incorporated worship music into my daily listening. My anxious thoughts started to drift away as I made Jesus my refuge, and my self-confidence in the Lord grew stronger.

The Bible tells us in Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

When we choose to invite the Lord into our lives through the music we listen to, he will dwell in us. The Lord is with us in every second of our day. As Christians, why not spend quality time with him through the music we listen to? There are countless ways to spend time in the presence of God, and our choice of music is just one.

By switching my music to more worship-focused songs, I began to notice how calm and uplifted I felt throughout the day. After listening to a worship song in the car on my way to class, I felt my thoughts gravitate toward being thankful instead of worried for all that God is doing in my life.

Kindness is a trait I desire to portray in my everyday life. When I am considerate of the people around me, it can turn my day around in a positive way. I believe that listening to worship music has affected my attitude for the better and shifted how I treat others daily. When I am feeding my soul with music that is uplifting, encouraging and glorifying to Jesus, I am more likely to also reflect Jesus unto others.

According to an article from Crossway.org, “When we join in musical worship, we have the beautiful opportunity to be refreshed in the Spirit and thus to bear the fruit of the Spirit.”

As I have grown into my adult years, I still continue to listen to my favorite worship songs from when I was young. The songs not only bring back happy memories from the past but will instill my mind with encouragement and peace to brighten my day. If you find yourself feeling down, I encourage you to give worship music a try and spend time in God’s Word through song.
