Indoor Practice Facility sees increased use for sports and campus events

February 26, 2019

Designed primarily as practice space for Flames Football during inclement weather and for family friendly pregame events, the $29 million Liberty University Indoor Practice Facility has also proven its worth as a multipurpose center for the university since it opened in August 2017.

Built adjacent to Williams Stadium and the Football Operations Center, the grand 95,000-square-foot structure with a 70-foot ceiling has an array of windows to allow for natural lighting as well as a breezeway exit onto the outdoor practice field.

Its functionality is as impressive as its architecture. To date, the facility has serviced many athletics teams, including men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s disc golf, softball, and cheerleading. It hosted the final playoff game of a men’s Ultimate tournament when it was delayed during a storm, and it often serves as the practice field for the Spirit of the Mountain Marching Band. It has also been used as a strength and conditioning area for a variety of NCAA Division I and Club Sports teams and an occasional physical education/sports medicine class.

Additionally, the facility hosted Liberty Commencement degree presentation ceremonies, Virginia Commonwealth Games tailgate parties, and football, field hockey, and soccer summer camps. It has helped keep fans dry for large sporting events and served as a holding area for teams, including those in the Virginia High School League state championship football games, played Dec. 8 at Williams Stadium.
