Anime voice actor and ‘Star Trek’ web series star shines in his career

June 8, 2018

Victor Mignogna (’86) never expected to be a voice actor when he graduated from Liberty University, but now he is the voice of some of the most popular characters in anime.

From the role of Ed Elric in “Fullmetal Alchemist” to Broly from “Dragon Ball Z,” Mignogna’s voice acting has reached millions of anime fans across the world. He earned the American Anime Award for Best Actor in 2007 and has been a featured guest at anime and video game conventions, where he takes the opportunity to share his faith. He often holds church services on Sundays during conventions.

“I know there are a lot of people watching me,” said Mignogna, who studied television and film production at Liberty. “There are a lot of kids who are watching what I say and do, and I try to be aware of that and make good decisions based on knowing that I have proclaimed my faith in Christ.”

Mignogna said that in a field where there aren’t many Christians actively professing their faith, he wants to speak honestly about it because it was God who led him to the industry.

Animation isn’t the only area of entertainment he works in. He has taken roles in many video games, movies, and TV productions. He is currently the executive producer of the award-winning YouTube series “Star Trek: Continues,” where he plays Captain Kirk.

As a Liberty student, Mignogna wrote and produced content and music for the Liberty Broadcast Network and helped run cameras for “The Old-Time Gospel Hour.” He often worked in the studio with Liberty’s founder, the late Jerry Falwell Sr., who called him Snoopy, a nod to Mignogna’s role in a Liberty theatre performance of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Mignogna also recalls working with fellow students Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max Smith and helped produce their first album as dc Talk.

“At Liberty, I developed and refined a lot of the skills that I went on to use professionally,” Mignogna said. “Whether it’s acting, singing, writing, producing, or filmmaking, all of these things that I do now I developed to a large degree during my time at Liberty.”
