Oh The Plans We Make

Written by Abi Broda, Assistant Director

Do you think about your future occupation through the summer months?

I know when I was in college, I didn’t. I spent time with friends, traveled as much as I possibly could, and tried to do anything that was the opposite of school. While it is important to recharge and spend the last free summers of your life doing what you love, there can also be a balance in using this time wisely to prepare for your future. Summers are a great time to take up either a short-term internship or shadowing, set up conversations with leaders in the field you are entering, and explore different areas of your field.

We as humans often make plans for a perfect little life that has no wrong or sharp left turns included, but that is hardly ever the path that God has for us. Even when the big-ticket items line up for us in life, small, sticky things can muddle our day-to-day lives. Everyone’s path is different. This is exactly why community of a variety of people in our lives is essential, even in our career planning and goals. Intentionally learning from others that have gone before you and how they got there can help you set a course.

Seeing the paths others have taken, learning how they learned to rely on God through the hard times and in abundance, and seeking their advice on your plans will help mature your heart by light-years (no matter how old you are).

If you feel a little lost when thinking about your future or don’t have key mentor figures in your life currently, I encourage you to pray. Ask God to release your need for control of your future (Isaiah 26:3), to release your worries about your future (Isaiah 40:31), and for help in trusting Him even in the unknown times of life (Isaiah 43:2).
