4 Physical Wellness Tips for Break

Deck the halls with health and wellness, fa-la-la-la-la-la. It’s that time of the year again when you can finally take a breather from the semester, focus on relaxing and sing a few Christmas carols with family and friends. Check-in with your physical wellness as the semester ends and the holidays begin. I recently saw a quote that said, “A healthy outside starts from the inside.” While I can encourage you to hit the gym and ensure you are eating healthy, physical wellness is more than exercise and healthy nutrition choices. Physical wellness is listening to and taking care of your body for optimal health and functioning. As a result, taking care of your physical body will help you get through the stress that comes with college. Physical wellness involves making good choices regarding illness prevention, flu and cold prevention, sleep, stress, and body movement.

As the semester ends, you prepare to head back home for the holidays. Here are a few tips that can help you check in with your physical wellness and set new intentions for a new semester:

  1. Be sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep.

It’s common knowledge that most people need 8 hours of sleep to stay healthy and alert. However, many people don’t understand the importance of maintaining a regular sleep schedule. Your body craves a normal routine, especially when it comes to sleep. So, get creative and create a bedtime routine.

  1. Be sure to check in for your checkup.

Have you had your annual wellness checkup? If not, the holiday break is an excellent time to meet with your family physician for a wellness check-in. Wellness checkups can involve seeking preventative medical care, screenings, and simply help you stay on top of your physical wellness.

  1. Be sure to have some relaxation time.

Relaxing can be complicated, especially when coming off a semester with a busy class schedule. I am sure this past semester was a challenge. Intentionally carve out some time to sit and relax for at least 10-20 minutes daily.

  1. Be sure to get some physical activity.

Making physical activity a part of your daily life can be a struggle. However, the key to sticking to an exercise routine is to find something you enjoy doing and can grow. If something is boring, don’t force yourself to engage in that activity. There are so many different ways to engage in physical activity.

Here’s to health and wellness and setting new physical wellness intentions as the year 2022 ends and a new year begins.
