Education Requirements

According to the Ohio Department of Education

The state of Ohio offers the following endorsements:

  • Ohio offers Mild/Moderate Need (K-12). Ohio does not offer a CTE endorsement and that limitations would occur between states.

Additional Requirements (During Degree Program)

  1. Master of Arts in Teaching students will need take EDLC 515, EDLC 554, EDLC 632 and EDLC 656 to meet the reading and phonics coursework requirements for Ohio. 

Additional Requirements (After Degree Conferral)

  1. Please submit all licensure documents (located on the Gate 4 Checklist) to gate4@liberty.edu. 
  2. Students must pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 190 Foundations of Reading exam.
  3. Students will need to obtain their Virginia license first to qualify for reciprocity.
  4. Gate 4 will complete a College Verification Form which will be used to apply for Virginia licensure.
  5. After obtaining a Virginia license students can then apply for an Ohio license through reciprocity.

Candidates who completed an out-of-state licensure program should review the information on this page regarding Ohio’s licensure requirements and the online application process. Candidates must submit the online application and all required documentation in order to begin the evaluation process and determine eligibility for an Ohio license. Please review all the steps of the licensure process and other useful information regarding the online application system on the Educator Licensure Process webpage.

Licensure candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and have completed an approved, traditional teacher preparation program through an accredited college or university. Candidates who do not qualify for the following licensure types may consider the Ohio Alternative Resident Educator licensure pathway or contact an accredited college or university with an Ohio Department of Higher Education approved educator preparation program.
