Educational Requirements

According to the South Dakota Department of Education:

The state of South Dakota offers the following endorsements. 

• South Dakota offers English Language Arts (5-8).

Students will need to obtain their Virginia license first to qualify for reciprocity. Students will also be required to complete the SD Indian Studies course.

Additional Requirements

South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL) 13-1-48 requires completion of a three-credit-hour course in South Dakota Indian Studies AND SDCL 13-42-71 requires anyone applying for an initial or renewal certificate as a teacher, administrator, or other education professional to participate in a minimum of one clock hour of suicide awareness and prevention training.

Reciprocity

South Dakota has reciprocity for candidates that have completed an Educator Preparation Program from an accredited University AND if you hold a valid educator certificate from the issuing state, pending the state will verify that there are no past or pending disciplinary actions for actual or alleged ethics violations. All candidates must also complete the SD Indian Studies course before being eligible for any type of reciprocity. If the applicant has 3 years of experience in the past 5 years. Can apply for a 1-year provisional certificate to complete SD Indian Studies.
