Advanced Generalist: Individual & Family Clinical – Montana
LU’s MSW program offers all the courses and internships necessary to meet education requirements for licensure in Montana* for any of the following credentials. Students are encouraged to meet with their gate advisor by contacting msw@liberty.edu for course selection and sequencing information to ensure they will meet the requirements for their specific license of choice.

Licensed Master’s Social Worker Candidate (LMSW Candidate)
- Exam Requirement: No exam required.
- Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: No postgraduate supervised experience required before licensure.
- Additional Requirements
- Must have an appropriate supervisor for the supervision period after achieving candidacy.
Licensed Master’s Social Worker (LMSW)
- Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
- Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: In a period of no less than 18 months, the candidate must have completed at least 2,000 hours of postgraduate experience in social work under the supervision of a licensed master’s social worker (LMSW) or a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). This must be concurrent with a minimum of 100 hours of direct supervision at a rate of two (2) hours per 160 work hours.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Candidate (LCSW Candidate)
- Exam Requirement: No exam required.
- Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: No postgraduate supervised experience required before licensure.
- Additional Requirements
- Must have an appropriate supervisor for the supervision period after achieving candidacy.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
- Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: In a period of no less than 24 months, the candidate must have completed at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate experience in social work under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed psychologist, or licensed and board-certified psychiatrist. This must be concurrent with a minimum of 100 hours of direct supervision, of which at least 50 hours must be individual and supervised by a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).
