Advanced Generalist: General – Maine

LU’s MSW program offers all the courses and internships necessary to meet education requirements for licensure in Maine* for any of the following credentials. Students are encouraged to meet with their gate advisor by contacting msw@liberty.edu for course selection and sequencing information to ensure they will meet the requirements for their specific license of choice.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

  • Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
  • Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: No postgraduate supervised experience required before licensure.
  • Additional Requirements
    • If the licensee holds the licensed social worker (LSW) or licensed master social worker (LMSW) license, completed 25 continuing professional education contact hours as required by Chapter 14 of the board’s rules.

Licensed Master Social Worker Conditional (Clinical)

  • Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
  • Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: No postgraduate supervised experience required before licensure.
  • Additional Requirements
    • If the licensee holds the licensed social worker (LSW) or licensed master social worker (LMSW) license, completed 25 continuing professional education contact hours as required by Chapter 14 of the board’s rules.
    • Documented intent to provide clinical social work experience, signed by licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), certified social worker – independent practice (CSW-PIP), licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed psychologist, licensed psychiatrist, or similarly-credentialed licensee in any of the aforementioned professions from any state or country engaged as the consultant.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
  • Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement:
    • For those who completed a clinical concentration in their graduate degree: In a period of no less than two (2) years, the candidate must have completed at least 3,200 hours of postgraduate experience in social work. This must be concurrent with a minimum of 96 hours of direct supervision in a clinical setting, of which at least 72 hours must be individual, with a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), certified social worker – independent practice, licensed clinical professional counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed psychologist, or licensed psychiatrist.
    • For those who completed a nonclinical concentration in their graduate degree: In a period of no less than four (4) years, the candidate must have completed at least 6,400 hours of postgraduate experience in social work. This must be concurrent with a minimum of 192 hours of direct supervision in a clinical setting, of which 144 hours must be individual, with a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), certified social worker – independent practice, licensed clinical professional counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed psychologist, or licensed psychiatrist.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Must hold a current, active LMSW – Conditional (Clinical) license.
    • Completed 25 continuing professional education contact hours as required by Chapter 14 of the board’s rules.
