School Counseling – Alaska
School Counselor
Alaska requires applicants for this licensure have at least a bachelor’s degree and (1) complete a teacher education program with an endorsement in school counseling or (2) complete a counseling program at a regionally accredited institution. State-specific coursework and mandatory trainings are also required.
One three semester hour Alaskan studies course is required for licensure eligibility: https://education.alaska.gov/
Students must also complete the following mandatory trainings within five years prior to the date of application: https://education.alaska.gov/teachercertification/mandatorytraining
- Sexual abuse awareness and prevention (AS 14.30.355)
- Alcohol or drug-related disabilities (AS 14.20.680)
- Dating violence awareness and prevention (AS 14.30.356)
Only training approved by an Alaska public school district, or the Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) will satisfy this requirement. Training offered by universities and other organizations must be approved by DEED. - Suicide awareness and prevention (AS 14.30.362)
