School Counseling (48 Hours) – Wisconsin
The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.
Wisconsin requires that applicants for this licensure have
- A Passing score on Praxis II
- A background check
- A minimum of a master’s degree, with specialized coursework and practicum/internship experience in school counseling
Experience Requirements
Eligibility for a WI license to teach in the elementary/secondary schools and two years of successful teaching experience at the elementary/secondary school levels, or
Completion of an approved one-year full-time internship in school counseling, or
A minimum of two years of successful experience as a licensed school counselor in an assigned position of 1/2 time or more
Reciprocity
If an applicant completes a preparation program located outside Wisconsin, Wisconsin requires they have completed all approved preparation program requirements and that this program leads to a license in the state where the program is headquartered. Wisconsin will look at an application with documents once it is submitted.
