School Counseling (48 Hours) – Utah

The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.

Applicants for Utah School Counseling Licensure, who have attended an institution out-of-state (including an online program), and who are not licensed in school counseling must also meet the following requirements

  • Earn a minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling from an institution that is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Program (CACREP), or another regionally recognized accrediting body that meets the Board approved Standards for Utah School Counselor Education Programs
  • Hold a NASDTEC Stage 2 or higher license in school counseling from a jurisdiction outside of Utah
  • Complete the Utah State Board of Education License Equivalency Review (LER) Application (https://www.schools.utah.gov/licensing/apply?mid=5257&tid=2) to apply for your Associate Educator License which is valid for up to three years
  • Complete the Utah State Board of Education College and Career Readiness Certificate Program within three years of receiving your Associate Educator License to receive your Professional Educator License
Additional Requirements

Applicant must be licensed in the state in which the program was completed and complete the Utah State Board of Education College and Career Readiness Certificate Program within three years of receiving an Associate Educator License to receive the Professional Educator License.
