School Counseling (48 Hours) – Tennessee

The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.

Tennessee requires applicants to:

  • Hold an advanced degree in school counseling from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Have completed an educator preparation program in school counseling as evidenced by one of the following: (1) a digital recommendation for licensure provided by an in-state educator preparation program in TNCompass;- a valid professional level license from a state other than Tennessee; OR (2) a recommendation from the out-of-state educator preparation provider where the educator completed the program (see https://www.tn.gov/education/educators/licensing/licensure-resources.html for the recommendation form). If applying based on completion of a program approved for licensure by a state other than Tennessee, submit a form completed by the out-of-state EPP where the educator completed a preparation program;
  • Submit qualifying scores on all required assessments as defined in the following, if applicable: https://www.tn.gov/sbe/rules–policies-and-guidance/policies.html . Educators applying with an active out-of-state license are not required to submit assessments for initial licensure but may need them for renewal or advancement; and
  • Ensure that the Department has official transcripts of all degrees earned through a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. The transcript must be submitted by the institution of higher education to Licensure@tn.gov through an approved clearinghouse, or mailed to 710 James Robertson Parkway, 9th Floor, Nashville, TN 37243.
