School Counseling (48 Hours) – South Dakota

The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.

The South Dakota PK-12 school counselor education program requires a master’s degree in school guidance or counseling. The required courses and experiences of a PK-12 school counselor education program shall meet the CACREP standards (2016). The program shall be accredited by CACREP or meet the current CACREP standards to prove compliance even if not officially recognized. The program shall require candidates to demonstrate the applicable content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge and skills identified in the CACREP standards and to demonstrate competency on the applicable multiple assessment measures in chapters 24:53:04, 24:53:05, and 24:53:06.
