School Counseling (48 Hours) – New York

The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.

New York requires that applicants for this licensure have either

Option One: An Approved Teacher Preparation Program

Completion of a NYS Registered program – School Counselor

Option Two: Individual Evaluation

A bachelor’s degree with graduate coursework in school counseling (48 hours), 100-hour supervised practicum, and 600-hour supervised internship

Option Three: Endorsement of a Certificate

Possess a valid, comparable certificate in another U.S. State or Territory – school counselor with additional education – master’s degree or higher; fulltime public-school experience in another U.S. state/territory in the last 5 years- school counselor- 3 years, or

Option Four: Completion of a Comparable Educator Program in Another U.S. State

Possess a Valid, Comparable Certificate in another U.S. State or Territory; School Counselor Additional Education – a master’s degree or higher completion of a comparable approved program in another jurisdiction
