School Counseling (48 Hours) – Michigan
The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.
Michigan requires that applicants for this licensure have either
Option One
A master’s degree or higher in a school counselor educator program including internship in a school setting at a college or university in another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe, or
Option Two
A master’s degree, and a valid or expired school counselor license issued by another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe.
Upon evaluation as an out-of-state candidate, qualifying applicants will be required to take and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) School Counselor examination. The testing requirement may be substituted by three years of successful experience serving as a school counselor in another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe. The three years of experience must be documented and submitted as part of the MOECS application.
Out-of-state candidates who apply for the SCL may initially receive a Temporary School Counselor License (TSCL) to provide more time for testing, if necessary.
