School Counseling (48 Hours) – Guam
The M.Ed. School Counseling 48-hour program (MECU) is closed to new enrollments, but previously enrolled students are still permitted to finish this program. The below information addresses state requirements measured against the 48-hour program. Degree Completion Plans (DCPs) beginning after July 1, 2023, will reflect the 60-hour School Counseling Program (SHCO). Students on DCPs prior to 2023-2024 whose state requirements are 60 credit hours can contact LUO Academic Advising to switch to the new 23-24 60-hour M.Ed. School Counseling DCP.
Professional School Counselor
Minimum Education Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in school counseling from an approved accredited college/university or from a recognized foreign institution of higher learning recognized Council for Higher Education Accreditation or its successors; Educator Program – two years of counseling, agreement, proof of one year teaching
- Pass PRAXIS I/CORE
- 200 hours of supervised field-based experience in K-12 setting (completed Internship)
- Professional growth plan acknowledged by site administrator
Minimum Experience Qualifications:
- Two years satisfactory school counseling.
- One-year satisfactory classroom teaching OR 360 hours of K-12 counseling related classroom teaching/session (documented evidence)
Term:
- Five years
Renewability:
- Any number of times to include within certificate holding period and sign by principal;
- 90 clock hours (training/faculty development) professional activities, semester hours, continuing education units, within the 5-year period Professional Growth Plan acknowledge by site administrator;
- Two years satisfactory performance evaluations sign by Principal/Administrator
Master School Counselor
Minimum Education Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in school counseling; 15 categorical graduate credits beyond the master’s degree in counseling and/or related field (i.e. education, psychology, etc.)
Minimum Experience Qualifications:
- Seven years satisfactory school counseling in K-12 setting (documented evidence);
- Two years satisfactory classroom teaching (documented evidence) OR 720 hours of K-12 counseling related classroom teaching/session (documented evidence)
Term:
- 10 years
Renewability:
- Any number of times to include within certificate holding period and sign by principal
- 120 clock hours (training/faculty development) professional activities, semester hours, continuing education units, within the 10-year period
- Professional growth plan acknowledges by site administrator
- Two years satisfactory performance evaluations sign by principal/administrator
