MAT- – Illinois

Educational Requirements

According to the Illinois Department of Education:

  • This program will be closing effective July 1, 2024. We recommend the student enrolls in the new MAT: Secondary Education cognate specific program.

The state of Illinois does NOT offer the following endorsements:

  • Engineering

The state of Illinois offers the following endorsements as well as the subsequent teaching endorsements.

  • Biology (9-12)
  • Business, Marketing and Computer Education
  • Chemistry (9-12)
  • Computer Science
  • English Language Arts (9-12)
  • Family and Consumer Science
  • Health and Physical Education: Health Education (PK -12)
  • Mathematics (9-12)
  • Music Choral: Music General (PK-12)
  • Music Instrumental: Music General (PK-12)
  • Physics (9-12)
  • Physics Education: Environmental Science (9-12) Earth and Space Science (9-12)
  • Social Science: History (9-12)
  • Spanish: World Language (PK-12)
  • TESL: English as a New Language
  • Theatre Arts/Drama
  • Visual Arts

Additional Requirements (After Degree Conferral)

  1. Please submit all licensure documents (located on the Gate 4 Checklist) to gate4@liberty.edu.
  2. Students will need to obtain their Virginia license first to qualify for reciprocity. 
  3. Gate 4 will complete a College Verification Form which will be used to apply for Virginia licensure. 
  4. Effective January 1, 2026 candidates will be required to successfully pass the applicable Illinois content area test(s).
  5. After obtaining a Virginia license, students can then apply for an Illinois license through reciprocity. 

Reciprocity

If you hold a valid license from another state that allows you to serve as a teacher, school support personnel, or administrator in that state’s public schools, you can transfer your license to Illinois and receive a professional educator license endorsed in a comparable area. If you have not obtained an out-of-state license, you can still qualify for a professional educator license by meeting additional requirements.
