MAT- – Alabama

Educational Requirements

According to the Alabama Department of Education

The state of Alabama offers the following endorsements. 

  • This program will be closing effective July 1, 2024. We recommend the student enrolls in the new MAT: Secondary Education cognate specific program.

The following endorsements are NOT offered in Alabama for MAT: Secondary Education:

  • Alabama does not offer Engineering

The following endorsements ARE offered in Alabama for MAT: Secondary Education:

  • Biology
  • Business/Marketing Education
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • English Language Arts
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Education
  • Health & Physical Education (Alabama offers Health and Physical Education as two separate endorsements.)
  • Mathematics
  • Music: Choral Music
  • Music: Instrumental Music
  • Physics
  • Physics: Earth Science (Alabama offers a Physics Endorsement and an Earth and Space Science Endorsement)
  • Spanish
  • Social Studies
  • TESL: English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Theater
  • Visual Arts

Additional Requirements (After Degree Conferral)

  1. Please submit all licensure documents (located on the Gate 4 Checklist) to gate4@liberty.edu. 
  2. Students will need to obtain their Virginia license first to qualify for reciprocity.
  3. Gate 4 will complete a College Verification Form which will be used to apply for Virginia licensure.
  4. After obtaining a Virginia license students can then apply for an Alabama license through reciprocity.

Reciprocity 

Individuals who hold a valid professional educator certificate issued by another state, the District of Columbia, a United States Territory, or the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) may wish to apply for Alabama certification through Certificate Reciprocity. Along with holding a valid professional educator certificate, other ancillary requirements (background clearance, experience, etc.) must be met.
