Educational Requirements

According to the Virginia Department of Education:

The state of Virginia offers the following endorsements.

  • Virginia offers Middle Education: English (6-8)
  • Virginia offers Middle Education: Social Science (6-8)
  • Virginia offers Middle Education Mathematics (6-8)
  • Virginia offers Middle Education Science (6-8)

Additional Requirements

Initial Licensure Statutory Requirements:

The following tests must be passed prior to applying for the Virginia Teaching License.

  • Certification of Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention Training
  • Emergency First Aid, CPR (including Hands-on Practice), and AED Training or Certification
  • Dyslexia Awareness Training
  • Behavior Intervention and Support Training
  • Effective July 1, 2023: Cultural Competency Training
License Renewal 

License Holders Who Finish Renewal Activities Before the Fifth Year of the Validity Period (pg. 19 of Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual)

The Application for License Renewal, the fee, and supporting documentation may be submitted to the Department of Teacher Education and Licensure, Department of Education, after January 1 of the year of expiration.  All licenses are issued with an effective date of July 1.

Fee Schedule for Licensure (Effective January 1, 2019)

On November 15, 2018, the Board of Education approved the following revised Licensure Fee Schedule, effective January 1, 2019.  Requests for the following actions must be accompanied by a personal check, money order, certified check, or cashier’s check made payable to the Treasurer of Virginia.  A $50 processing fee will be charged for a returned check. Applicants may also utilize the Pay Now feature on the Office of Licensure website to pay for the application fee upfront. Please note that if this option is utilized, the receipt must be printed and submitted with the application packet.
