Educational Requirements

According to the Massachusetts Department of Education:

The state of Massachusetts offers the following endorsements.

  • Massachusetts offers Elementary (1-6).

Additional Requirements (After Degree Conferral)

  1. Please submit all licensure documents (located on the Gate 4 Checklist) to gate4@liberty.edu.
  2. Students will need to obtain their Virginia license first to qualify for reciprocity.
  3. Gate 4 will complete a College Verification Form which will be used to apply for Virginia licensure.
  4. After obtaining a Virginia license students can then apply for a Massachusetts license through reciprocity.

Reciprocity

Massachusetts participates with every state and the District of Columbia through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Agreement to accept candidates’ state-approved educator preparation programs or possession of the equivalent of at least an Initial license/certificate. Please note that the interstate agreement does not exempt candidates from degree, testing, and/or prerequisite requirements applicable to the license sought.

On October 15, 2020, the Board voted to approve a regulation that establishes a pilot program in which the Department may accept other tests in lieu of certain MTEL tests. See the Pilot of Alternative Assessments to the MTEL website for additional information regarding the regulation change.
