Family Nurse Practitioner – New York
Liberty University meets education requirements; however, Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON) is unable to place students in practicums in the state of New York, due to New York Board of Nursing educational and license regulations for nurse practitioners. Students may be eligible to complete practicum in an approved state. Please contact your School of Nursing Practicum Coordinators for more information regarding approved practicum states.
New York State License Requirements:
a. RN License.
i. You must maintain a current, unencumbered RN license for any Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner program.
ii. New York is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact Administration, therefore, to participate in practicum in an approved state the student must hold, at minimum, an active RN license in the approved practicum state.
iii. Any change in licensure status must be reported to the Liberty University School of Nursing Online Student Support Coordinator
b. APRN License Application Requirements
i. Education
1. Applicants must graduate from a nurse practitioner education program registered by the State Education department, or a program determined by the Department to be equivalent. Official transcripts should be submitted electronically, from the educational institution, to DPLSEduc@nysed.gov.
2. In addition to official transcripts, applicants must submit the Nurse Practitioner Form 2 – Certification of Professional Education, to the New York Office of the Professions. Applicants should complete Section I of this form, then send the form to the educational institution for its completion and submission. To request assistance in completing this step, please send Form 2, with Section I completed, to the Liberty University School of Nursing Online Student Support Coordinator.
3. Applicants who have completed a program other than a program registered by the New York State Education Department must complete Form 2C – Verification of Pharmacotherapeutics Course, as qualifying for a certificate. This form, which verifies the equivalent of 3 credit hours in Pharmacotherapeutics, must be submitted directly to the New York Office of the Professions by the educational institution. ii. Certification
This program meets requirements for eligibility to sit for national certification examinations. Applicants seeking a New York State Nurse Practitioner Certificate through a national certifying organization must have Form 3 – Verification of National Nurse Practitioner Examination, completed by the national certifying organization and submitted directly to the New York Office of the Professions.
iii. Requirements Beyond Education Program
Applicants graduating from an out-of-state NP program must complete coursework on New York and Federal Laws Governing Prescriptions and Record Keeping. For licensure, applicants must submit Form 2B – Verification of Instruction in New York State and Federal Laws Related to Prescriptions and Record Keeping, to the New York Office of the Professions. This form must be completed by the organization where the student completed the course on New York State and Federal Laws Related to Prescriptions and Record Keeping, then submitted directly to the New York Board.

Practicum Placement Support – Frequently Asked Questions:
a. Will LUSON support practicum placement in New York?
Liberty University School of Nursing students are not approved for practicum in the State of New York. However, LUSON will support practicum placement in an approved state.
b. Are there any specific requirements to consider when completing practicum as a non-resident of an approved state?
i. Students must hold, at minimum, an RN license in the state where they plan to complete their practicum experience.
ii. Some states require the student or educational institution to submit a report detailing student, faculty and preceptor information for all students completing practicum in the state.
