Marriage & Family Therapy – Virginia
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Virginia requires that applicants for this licensure have 60 graduate hours or 90 quarter hours.
Course Requirements
Program must include 6 semester hours or 9 quarter hours in marriage and family studies and marriage and family therapy.
Program must include 3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours in each of the following core areas:
- Human growth and development across the lifespan
- Abnormal behaviors
- Diagnosis and treatment of addictive behaviors
- Multicultural counseling
- Professional identity and ethics
- Research
- Assessment and treatment
Internship Requirements
Supervised internship of at least 600 hours to include 240 hours of direct client contact, of which 200 hours are with couples and families. Only internship hours earned after completion of 30 graduate semester hours may be counted towards residency hours.
