Marriage & Family Therapy – Minnesota

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

Minnesota requires that applicants for this licensure have COAMFTE-aligned additional Marriage and Family Studies, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Human Development classes that Liberty University does not offer.

Minnesota requires a degree from an appropriately accredited institution including the following:

  • 9 semester hours of human development courses (such as human behavior, psychopathology, personality development, human sexuality)
  • 9 semester hours of marital and family studies (such as family functioning, family subsystems, and contemporary types of families)
  • 9 semester hours of marital and family therapy (such as major theories, intervention methods, and MFT treatment planning)
  • 3 semester hours of professional studies (such as professional socialization, inter-professional cooperation, ethics, and family law)
  • 3 semester hours of research (research methods, statistics, and research of special issues).
  • Clinical practicum should include 300 hours of client contact. No more than half of the required hours should be spent carrying out individual therapy (the rest should be with couples or families).
