Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP) – New York
Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
New York requires that applicants for this licensure have a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling that is CACREP accredited as a clinical mental health counseling program of 60 semester hours. The graduate coursework shall include, but not be limited to, the following areas:
- Human growth and development
- Social and cultural foundations of counseling
- Counseling theory and practice and psychopathology
- Psychopathology
- Group dynamics
- Lifestyle and career development
- Assessment and appraisal of individuals, couples and families and groups
- Research and program evaluation
- Professional orientation and ethics
- Foundations of mental health counseling and consultation
- Clinical instruction
- A minimum one-year supervised internship or practicum in mental health counseling, defined as at least 600 clock hours
Additional Requirements
Applicants must complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse in accordance with Section 6507(3)(a) of the Education Law.
