Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP) – Michigan

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

For applicants that entered a program on or before June 30, 2023, the program must consist of not less than 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours in a graduate-level degree granting program.

For applicants that entered a program on or after July 1, 2023, the program must consist of the following requirements, and pass 1 of the following exams:

  • Not less than 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours in a graduate-level degree granting program
  • Human trafficking training certificate
  • Implicit Bias Training
  • The National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE)
  • The National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE)
  • The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC)

Licensure Requirements

  • Not less than 3,000 hours accrued of a post-degree counseling experience in not less than a 2-year period under an LPC in the experimental counseling experience.
  • A limited licensure of (LLPC) is valid for 1 year and may renew.
  • Not less than 100 hours of regularly scheduled supervision under a License Professional Counselor (LPC) who meets the requirements outline in R 338.1781. The experimental requirement of Michigan determines 100 hours of regularly scheduled supervision under a LPC reflects a 48 semester hours program for accrued 100 required hours in the immediate physical presence of the supervisor or via 2-way real-time audiovisual technology that allows direct, contemporaneous interaction by sight and sound between the supervisor and the supervisee. The supervision begins on the issuance of the limited license (LLPC) from the Michigan and continues until the licensed professional counselor license is issued.
  • Not less than 600 clock-hours internship of practicum and internship of supervised clinical experience in counseling.

Additional Requirements

Human Trafficking

Individuals seeking licensure must have completed training in identifying victims of human trafficking that meets the standards in Administrative Rule 338.1771 prior to being issued a license. The training must only be completed one time.

Implicit Bias Training

Beginning June 1, 2022, individuals seeking licensure must have completed at least 2 hours of implicit bias training within the five years immediately preceding issuance of the license.
