Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP) – Kansas

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Kansas requires that applicants for this licensure have a master’s degree in counseling which includes 60 hours, with credits distributed among the 9 core areas of professional development, and includes a supervised practicum, pass a nationally standardized competency exam, and have an application on file with the BSRB six weeks prior to taking the exam.

Course Requirements

Degree must include 45 graduate semester hours of counseling coursework distributed among each of the following areas:

  • Counseling theory and practice
  • The helping relationship
  • Group dynamics, processing and counseling approaches and techniques
  • Human growth and development
  • Career development and lifestyle foundations
  • Appraisal of individuals
  • Social and cultural foundations
  • Research and evaluation
  • Professional orientation
  • Supervised practicum and internship

Additionally, the degree must have 15 credit hours, as part of or in addition to the requirements under subsection (b), supporting diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders with use of the American psychiatric association’s diagnostic and statistical manual through identifiable study of the following content areas: Psychopathology, diagnostic assessment, interdisciplinary referral and collaboration, treatment approaches and professional ethics.

Practicum Requirements

Students must complete a graduate level supervised clinical practicum of supervised professional experience including psychotherapy and assessment with individuals, couples, families or groups, integrating diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders with use of the American psychiatric association’s diagnostic and statistical manual, with not less than 280 hours of direct client contact or additional postgraduate supervised experience as determined by the board.
