Advanced Standing Master of Social Work: General – Vermont

LU’s MSW program offers all the courses and internships necessary to meet education requirements for licensure in Vermont* for any of the following credentials. Students are encouraged to meet with their gate advisor by contacting msw@liberty.edu for course selection and sequencing information to ensure they will meet the requirements for their specific license of choice.

Licensed Master’s Social Worker (LMSW)

  • Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
  • Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: No postgraduate supervised experience required before licensure.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Completed the Vermont jurisprudence examination.

NOTE: Persons holding a licensed master’s social worker (LMSW) license are not permitted to practice psychotherapy. Persons practicing psychotherapy, including persons engaged in supervised practice toward licensure as a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW), must be entered on the Roster of Non-Licensed and Non-Certified Psychotherapists.

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

  • Exam Requirement: The candidate must pass an ASWB exam for the appropriate licensure level.
  • Postgraduate Supervised Experience Requirement: The candidate must have completed at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate experience in clinical social work, including at least 2,000 hours of direct client contact, under the supervision of a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW), a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC), a licensed psychologist, or a licensed physician or osteopathic physician who has completed a residency in psychiatry. This must be concurrent with a minimum rate of one (1) hour of direct supervision per 30 work hours.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Must hold a current, active LMSW license.
    • Register for the Roster of Non-Licensed and Non-Certified Psychotherapists.
