Addiction Counseling – Maryland
Licensed Graduate Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LGADC)
Maryland requires that applicants for this licensure have a master’s degree with 48 graduate credits and 39 credits from the topic areas listed below OR a master’s degree in a program of study judged by the Board to be substantially equivalent, that has a counseling emphasis in terms of subject matter and extent of training required for licensure, from an accredited institution approved by the Board, with a minimum of 51 credits in counseling that includes the required alcohol and drug coursework for LGADC. All course work must be from a regionally accredited college or university.
Course Requirements
Each course must be at least 3 semester credit (5 quarter credit) apart from the 6-semester credit (10 quarter credit) course requirement for the alcohol and drug internship/practicum/field placement
- Medical aspects of chemical dependency (Pharmacology)
- Addictions treatment delivery
- Ethics (with a focus on Alcohol & Drug)
- Alcohol and Drug Counseling Internship/Practicum/Field Placement (6 credits)
- Individual counseling
- Group therapy
- Family counseling
- Abnormal psychology
- Topics in substance related and addictive disorder
- Theories of counseling
- Human growth and development
- Treatment of co-occurring disorders
- Personality development
- Diagnosis and treatment of mental & emotional disorders
- Psychopathology
Additional Requirements for LGADC
Applicants need two semesters of internship, PSYC 430 Abnormal Psychology, CEFS 502 Human Growth and Development, and an ethics training specific to addiction (not general counseling ethics like our CEFS 501 course).
Additional Requirements for LCADC
LCADC requires a 60-credit hour program, and the same additional requirements noted above.
