Addiction Counseling – Arizona

Licensed Independent Addiction Counselor (LIAC)

Arizona requires that applicants for this licensure have a master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university accredited by National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission (NASAC). Pursuant to A.R.S. § 32-3253(14), the Board may review educational curricula of regionally accredited colleges or universities with programs not otherwise accredited by an organization or entity recognized by the Board to determine if the curricula is consistent with the requirements in A.R.S. Title 32, Ch. 33 for licensure.

Course Requirements

  • Psychopharmacology including but not limited to effects on mood, behavior, cognition, and physiology
  • Models of treatment and relapse prevention: Including but not limited to philosophies and practices of generally accepted and scientifically supported models
  • Group work: Group dynamics and processes as they relate to addictions and substance use disorders
  • Working with diverse populations: Issues and trends in a multicultural and diverse society as they relate to substance use disorder and addiction
  • Co-occurring disorders including but not limited to philosophies and practices of generally accepted and evidence-supported models
  • Ethics including but not limited to: Legal and ethical responsibilities and liabilities; Standards of professional behavior and scope of practice; Client rights, responsibilities, and informed consent; Confidentiality and other legal considerations in the practice of behavioral health
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment: Use of assessment and diagnosis to develop appropriate treatment interventions for substance use disorders or addictions
  • Supervised practicum (300 hours required for master’s programs): A supervised practicum shall integrate didactic learning related to substance use disorders with face-to-face, direct counseling experience, including intake and assessment, treatment planning, discharge planning, documentation, and case management activities.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must take ADCN 606 Pharmacology of Addiction and Recovery as an elective to cover requirements.
