How to Network in College

It seems like ‘networking’ has been a popular buzzword for quite some time.  You hear it often, you’re told to do it, and you think you want too…but what does it even mean? How do you network? Can you network in college?

I’m definitely not a networking expert, but I have learned a few things about it in my communications classes and from personal experience!

The dictionary definition of networking is: “the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contact.”

I’ve found that networking comes naturally when the intention is getting to know someone else.  Some people may think that networking only happens in a professional setting, but it actually happens anytime you meet someone!  I’ve made connections with people at church, in the dining hall, on my dorm, walking to class, and more!  Networking isn’t always about being professional, it’s about being yourself, sharing your story and passions, and giving other’s the space to do that as well!  It’s about helping each other out, building relationships, and bringing what you have to offer to the table – whether it’s getting a new job or volunteering at a local ministry!

Networking is all about getting involved and meeting people, even in your everyday life!  Instead of going to class and leaving without interacting with others, meet the other students around you.  Talk to your professor, ask questions, and build a relationship with them!  Be open to interacting and building relationships with those that are different than you!  It’s easier to befriend those that like the same things as you, look like you, and talk like you…but your networking will be limited if you are picky with those you choose to interact with. 

Another great way to network is to join a club here at Liberty and get involved in what you are passionate about!  I was a part of a club for two years and even served as the Vice President.  That experience brought me many friendships, connections, and hands-on experience that has shaped who I am today!

The Career Center is another incredible resource that Liberty offers students.  The Career Center is the best place to get help with resume building, setting up a LinkedIn, job hunting, and more!  They also host job fairs throughout the school year, so make sure to take advantage of those events.  Job fairs are a great way to network and meet some faces that represent organizations and possible future employers!  So many students miss out on the resources that the Career Center offers by not utilizing it.  It’s there for you, so make an appointment!

Whether you get involved in a club, serve at your church, or do a summer internship, don’t forget to be who God created you to be.  You’ll make so many friends and connections by being yourself and allowing other people to be themselves!
