Description

Approved AVIA 300 or AVIA 409 students may participate in a minimum of 20 hours of service at Lynchburg Regional Airport control tower. There is a lack of mutual understanding between the control tower and SOA regarding best practices and areas of concern. Current practice is to react when things go wrong. The goal is to engage in a service project to discern ways to proactively improve collaboration.

Learning outcomes include (1) Increased awareness of communication, safety, and training issues affecting flight operations; (2) Building knowledge of air traffic control issues for School of Aeronautics leadership; (3) Deepen rapport and understanding between the two participants.

Service Component: Students to collect, assess, and measure data and provide a reflective journal update at the conclusion of each five hours to the course supervisor. At end of the service project, students will collaborate on a group debriefing for selected SOA and LYH Control Tower leadership of best practices, areas of concern, and recommendations for improvement. Project to replicate Line Operations Surveillance Observation model, where participants serve during flight operations aimed toward safety culture transformation. Offered during Fall and Spring semesters.

Students sign up for 12 weekly 90 minute time slots. Tower to host two student pairs daily at 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. Course supervisor(s) to host introduction meeting to brief students regarding service project expectations.
