CSER Course Pathing: Helms School of Government

Welcome to the CSER course path for the Helms School of Government. Below you can find organizations recommended by HSOG faculty uniquely suited for your major. For more information about these organizations or for help registering for CSER, please email cser@liberty.edu.

General Selection (Any Major)

Within the Helms School of Government, students can serve as a teaching assistant and help with various departmental tasks. This will allow them to develop stronger relationships with faculty and gain professional experience. Students are also encouraged to serve through the Army & Air Force ROTC programs or through local churches and non-profits such as Parkview Community Mission.

Several HSOG-related clubs perform unique service projects in the community and are listed under CSER 311. These clubs include: Liberty University Student Veterans Association, Students Behind our Military, LifeLine, & Criminal Justice Club.

Other HSOG-related SGA clubs offer CSER to officers only and are listed under CSER 399. These clubs include: American Association of University Women, Alexander Hamilton Society, Armed Forces Communication and Electronics, Cyber Defense Club, Environmental Stewardship Club, International Justice Mission, Ladies for Liberty, Liberty International Affairs Society, Liberty United Nations Association, Liberty University Forensic Science Club, Pre-Law Society, Strategic Intelligence Society, Students at Liberty for Gun Rights, Young Americans for Liberty, & Young Women for America.

Criminal Justice

The community needs strong criminal justice majors with a heart to serve. Criminal Justice students have amazing opportunities to serve on campus or in the Lynchburg area. Students can work with Dr. Joel Cox to develop a school resource officer volunteer program. They can work security at Scaremare or work with recovering addicts through TRBC’s Elim Home. They can also get involved in research projects through Service-Learning courses; such as Professor Larry Presley’s Corrections and Juvenile Justice courses.

International Relationships

International Relations majors should seek out ways to utilize their unique education to serve the community. They can perform CSER through the LU Fellowship program in Washington D.C. or get involved in SGA governance on campus through one of several SGA clubs or HSOG societies. Students can also find personalized opportunities through a special project.

Law & Policy

Law and Policy majors are encouraged to serve in Student Government as elected representatives of the student body. Students in this major should also plan to complete a CSER through the LU Fellowship program in Washington D.C.

Students can also serve the local community by serving with the Liberty Counsel Media Relations, a law firm performing pro bono work for clients in need. Students can gain important career skills while helping the law firm complete its mission.

* By registering through a Special Project (CSER 399-001), students may request CSER eligibility at non-profit organizations and ministries that are not listed on the Service Opportunities page.

**Students can choose from churches listed on the Service Opportunities page or students may request CSER eligibility through a different church by registering a Church Extension (CSER 279-001).
